Later this evening, Mary went outside to close the chicken house and this snake (its entire length of 4 feet) was stretched across the doorway.

Maybe if you keep chasing, or luring, all your mice out to the woodpile, the snake will eat them. The snake will be well fed and happy and your house would be mouse free.
Next you'll have to rename your road Black Lane.
